Bible Talks

Acts 19:8-10 

“Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God. But some of them became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. So Paul left them. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord.”

After preaching in the synagogue Paul started having “Bible Talks” (a discussion about God, Jesus Christ, and our lives) every day for two whole years! With 365 days in a year, that’s 730 different Bible Talks. Paul could have used the same Bible Talk over and over again or used 730 different ones the Bible doesn’t say specifically but we can imagine. What we do know is this “daily discussion” changed the world!

“All of the providence of Asia heard the word.” Today that would be the Republic of Turkey. Turkey has a total population of 100,955,188 people that’s scattered over 302,535 square miles! This is what they evangelized in the first century without planes, trains or cars but simply with the motivation of the “love of Christ” and “fear of the Lord” (1Corinthians 5:14).

When the apostle John is on the Island of Patmos he being inspired by God wrote the last book in the Bible called Revelation. Interesting- is who the book is addressed to. John is told by Jesus to “write on a scroll what you see and send it to the seven churches” and John sends a greeting “to the seven churches in the providence of Asia” (Revelation 1:4, 11). The churches came from Bible Talks and the book Revelation came because of those churches. This is what 730 Bible Talks can do!

Bible Talk is the lifeline of your church! When you’re having strong Bible Talks during the week, Gods dream of seeing the world evangelized in our day is possible! These daily discussion groups are effective because everyone’s physical, spiritual and emotional needs can be met. In Mark 6:39 “Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.” Before the needs could be met, everyone needed to be a part of smaller groups instead of one mega blob. Then everyone went home satisfied, over 5,000 people! I believe our churches and preachers want to meet the needs of the people God has I entrusted to our care so that everyone will be satisfied. However we will not be successful if we do not split people up into small groups, also known as “Bible Talks”. With a Bible Talk you can make sure each person is getting the love of the fellowship. You can make sure each person is able to share their thoughts and their feelings. They provide an intimate relationship with other Christians and allow you to invite your friends and family or even strangers to hear the word of God and see it lived out. Bible Talks make it practical of every member of your church capable to fulfill Jesus’s great commission. Without Bible Talks people’s needs can easily be overlooked and it makes it harder, dare say impossible, to fulfill Jesus’s dream. Your friend may not be open to coming to “church” on Sunday, but thank God you have a Bible Talk they will come to and get a chance to hear the word of God.

I believe it is groups like these that will be the driving force in our churches’ growth in any city that we are in. That’s why here in Boston, though we started with just 16 people 11 months ago, we now have 42 members, each in one of 9 different Bible Talks. Once you get a strong Bible talk, it’s going to grow! However once it grows you have to keep the small group mentality and so the Bible Talk just doesn’t grow, it multiplies! That is how you grow your church numerically and geographically! We are not just building a local community church, we are winning the world and it’s starting with our small groups all over the city!

Come and join us in our homes, at our schools, or even at a restaurant for one of our small group Bible discussions. You’re going to love it; you’re physical, emotional and most importantly your spiritual needs can be met and you can grow in your relationship with God and the family of believers.
